Did you know…
It was not only because of the Beatles’ popularity that their July 1966 concert at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila turned out to be memorable. It was said that the band had “snubbed” an appointment with then First Lady Imelda Marcos and some 300 children of politicians and military officers in MalacaƱang.
In the “Beatles’ Anthology,” band member Ringo Starr recalled turning on the TV and seeing Marcos screaming, “They’ve let me down.” There were also shots of empty plates and crying kids “because the Beatles hadn’t turned up.” The band claimed they did not know they were supposed to show up at the Palace earlier that day.
As a result of the “snub,” only one motorcycle escort accompanied the departing Beatles to the Manila International Airport, in contrast to the hundreds of policemen that welcomed them upon their arrival. Some fans who showed their displeasure at the band’s behavior reportedly spat at them, causing the members to hide behind monks and nuns.
